I let Oreo's rabies vaccination expire figuring we'd get around to it the next time he was at the vet - no rush since I'm not working, right?
Wrong. Our neighbor's son picked the cat up and Oreo bit him to get away. Not a bad bite, luckily the child is fine with no infection, but we had to keep Oreo inside for 10 long days to monitor for any signs of rabies. He didn't exhibit any, thank goodness. The vet said he probably has a residual immunity and the risk is extremely low anyway, but if they suspect an animal is rabid they can only confirm it by putting the animal down and examining the brain tissue. Yikes. Our furry friend is now current on his rabies shot. Learn from my stupidity and keep your critters protected too!
