We went to the orthopedist yesterday for the cast application, but there was too much swelling and the doctor felt the hand fracture is stable enough to heal properly without one. Matt had already removed his splint on Sunday without permission so I was really dreading dealing with him in a bulky cast for 6 weeks. We return for another x-ray in 2 weeks to monitor the situation. In the meantime, he has a sugar-tong splint for protection that can be removed for bathing, and his last two fingers are taped together for support. He can't compete, but he can go to wrestling practice to continue conditioning. This kind of break usually heals quickly, and his fingers are moving extremely well for so soon after the injury. That's a big relief!
