Bittersweet

Claire went to her first sleepover last night and didn't miss me a bit.

We had 4 deer in the backyard this morning (three pictured here).

Reminds of the time when Claire was very young and I tried to show her the deer behind the house, but she couldn't see them since they were camoflagued (like the deer at the top).  The next morning she called me to the window saying "Look, Mom!  Do you see the tangaroo?"  I laughed and said "Claire, there really were deer here yesterday!"  She thought it was a new game where we pretend to see invisible animals behind the house.

Rolling thunder

Mandy hasn't slept with me since she was a puppy, but she spent 45 minutes in my bed last night.  At first she was shaking and panting, but finally she calmed down and slept for a bit.  It made me feel good to be able to comfort her.  She cries every time it storms.

They used to fight naps

Just checked in on Matt and Katie in their rooms and they are both sound asleep (4:50 p.m. on a Monday).

Living on borrowed time

Whiskers (kitty) spends hours watching our hamster run around in his cage.  Yesterday, Vinny pulled an ill-advised Houdini and escaped from his exercise ball.  Miraculously Katie found him hiding behind the washer as Whiskers guarded the laundry room door.  It's fortunate I keep the cats well fed and that Katie found him alive!

I was also 8 when I learned to ride my bike

Last weekend Claire claimed she was ready, but Dad was enamored with an Internet word game and refused to take the training wheels off her bike.

Today he tried to put her off again (hello Claire, March Madness), but she wouldn't have it.  "I'm ready now Dad.... geez!"  

Sure enough, she took off like a bird in flight.

Relaying the message

Me to Dave after he ran in from outside:  Tell Sister two minutes until lunch.

Dave to Claire as he walked out the front door:  Claire, we only have two stupid minutes!!

Waiting impatiently for the repairman

The dishwasher is leaking, but it's under warranty so it's all good right?  It would be if I wasn't trapped here during the 1 to 5 p.m. torture window.  This is me pacing like a caged lion!

Loads of marketing

Personally received three separate emails (from Apple, Best Buy, and Verizon) this morning announcing the new third generation iPAD is available today.  There was a line outside SuperTarget in Apex well in advance of the 8 a.m. store opening.  I have to admit it looks sweet, but:
