In the news today: Lawmakers won't currently require a warning regarding danger to the fetus in states where marijuana is legal even though there is no known "safe amount" that can be used during pregnancy. Medical professionals readily admit they do not have a grasp on the sequelae. I'll say it again. No one knows what impact marijuana smoking in utero will eventually have on these children. There aren't enough studies. Possible birth defects, low birth weight, low IQ, et cetera -- maybe not, but why take the risk with the most precious thing in your life?
I firmly resisted anything unessential while pregnant and breastfeeding, just in case. I know my own mom and grandmother didn't think twice about prescription medications, alcohol or cigarettes during pregnancy, but as a culture I'd hope we have learned something since then.
Of course warning labels don't work if a mom-to-be wants to abuse a substance. We understand (vaguely) and that isn't my point. If a pregnant woman doesn't know the facts, she could easily construe the lack of warning as a blessing to smoke marijuana during her pregnancy. The results as a society could be catastrophic longterm, but individual babies could be saved with a warning. Personally, I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize one of my pregnancies/kiddos and I know I'm not alone. Take the precaution and if history shows pot in pregnancy is safe, simply remove the warnings.
